A journey of nature discovery, this trip takes you through some of Thailand’s most dramatic and beautiful wilderness areas. Lush tropical jungles, mangrove forest, limestone caves, coral reefs and crystal clear coastal waters are all part of this unique forest and marine combination. The forests of Khao Yai National Park support a wealth of wildlife including wild elephants, gibbons, macaque monkeys, bears, wild dog, deer, and a staggering diversity of bird life. In southern Thailand, Phang-Nga bay boasts stunning coastal limestone features, coral reefs and mangroves that are home to monkeys, sea eagles, bats and a multitude of marine life. Kayak, trek, snorkel and swim through some of Thailand’s most striking natural surroundings on the Highlands and Islands adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1

You will be picked up at 06.00 from your Bangkok hotel by private vehicle for the 2-3 hour transfer to Khao Yai National Park. On arrival at the park, head out on a nature walk with your naturalist leader for the rest of the day, exploring the lush evergreen forest that dominates the central regions of Khao Yai national park. Porters are on-hand to carry food and other essentials, and a cook prepares a traditional Thai lunch for you in the forest. After exiting the forest, you will visit the park headquarters to learn more about the park and hear about on-going attempts to bring together wildlife monitoring, anti-poaching training and rural development projects to conserve the parks diverse wildlife. Then time for a shower and a well-deserved rest. After dinner, a night drive through the forest on the look out for deer, civets, porcupine and other wildlife.

Day 2

An early morning walk to a wildlife watchtower on the look out for birds such as the great hornbill, and to witness possible mammal activity at a nearby mineral lick. Back for breakfast, then set out on a full day nature trek with your naturalist leader. Again, porters will be carrying everything necessary for another delicious lunch in the forest. After finishing the walk and having dinner, a night drive to uncover some of the forests nocturnal mysteries and hopefully catch sight of some of the parks 250 or so elephants. Day 3

A morning nature trek that focuses on the lives of the parks gibbon population. You will set off early in an attempt to view these amazing forest acrobats at close range. After lunch on the trail, exit the forest around mid-afternoon and transfer to your accommodation to get cleaned up and relax.Before sunset, set out to witness thousands of wrinkle-lipped bats as they steam out of a nearby cave, and watch falcons as they prey on the bats.

Overnight: accommodation in the heart of the park or local resort*. Walking Distance: 4-5 kms over a period of 4-5 hours. Meals: [B,L,D]

Day 4

After breakfast, depart the hotel by private minibus for the 2 hour drive to Bangkok airport, and the early afternoon flight to Phuket. You will be collected at Phuket airport for the transfer to your hotel. Free to relax on the beach and explore Phuket island.

Day 5

Start of a 3-day coastal kayaking tour. This first day is fully guided in specially designed inflatable kayaks. Your guide paddles you through complex tidal sea caves into lagoons called “Hong´s (Thai for “room or chamber”.). You will be picked up from your Phuket hotel at 0800 for the transfer to Ao Por pier, from where you depart by motorboat for the islands. Arriving at the first of the islands, you will explore caves and lagoons by kayak, before having a sumptuous lunch onboard the support boat. After lunch, you arrive at a second Island for more cave exploration and a circumnavigation of the islands. Here you will traverse a 300m cave in to a giant lagoon. Following an afternoon of exploration you arrive at your campsite for the night, a sandy beach on an secluded island. After being taught how to handle sit-on-top kayaks you board the support boat for a delicious Thai seafood dinner.

Day 6

Having trained on the single seat hard shell sit-on-top kayak, spend the next two days paddling yourself. After breaking camp, depart for North Koh Yao Noi on the escort boat. Breakfast on board is followed by a paddle around Lao Ga Do Island, before heading for one of the areas spectacular large lagoons, home to a mangrove forest. Here there is a chance to see many different types of wildlife, including two types of monkeys, the crab-eating macaques and the dusky langurs. Water monitor lizards are also quite common here. These impressive beast can range up to 2.5 metre in length although species have been found up to 3.2 metres. Phang Nga Bay is home to many types of birds including large species such as the white-bellied sea eagle, the brahamny kite, several types of Hornbills, and a number of colourful species of Kingfishers. Lunch onboard the support boat, before heading to a small group of islands which boasts beautiful sandy beaches and are home to some small pristine reefs. Snorkeling, swimming and paddling in the area before making camp on the island. Back to the support boat for an unforgettable sunset dinner.

Day 7

After breaking camp, and breakfast onboard, you will explore an area that is home to a maze of waterways and mangrove forest. Here you will see wonderful rock formations and possibly monkeys, water monitors, white-bellied sea eagles and bramany kites. After lunch, head to explore Koh Hong. Check out the islands white sandy beach, snorkel with many tropical fish over a spectacular shallow reef (3m or 10 feet) or explore the interior of the island, home to many types of birds including the great hornbill and white bellied sea eagle. At 15:30, board the escort boat and depart for Ao Por pier.At 17:00, arrive Ao Por pier and transfer to your Phuket hotel.

Day 8

A morning at leisure, before being picked up for the transfer to the airport to catch the mid-afternoon flight to Bangkok. End of service.
